Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
CBT is based on the theory that our thoughts, feelings and behaviours are linked, and that change in any one will effect change in the others. Supervision
Supervision for provisional psychologists towards registration with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) is based on the competencies set out in CAP’s Supervision Manual.
Competency-based supervision is defined as an approach that explicitly identifies the knowledge, skills, and values that are assembled to form a clinical competency and develops learning strategies and evaluation procedures to meet criterion-referenced competence standards in keeping with evidence-based practices and requirements of the local clinical setting. (Falender, C.A. & Shafranske, E.P. 2007. Competence in competency-based supervision practice: Construct and application. Professional Psychology: Research and practice. Vol 38, No. 3, 232-240).
One of the goals of supervision is to develop competency in self-reflection and self-evaluation, so that the newly registered psychologist can function as their own supervisor as their career progresses. Part of competence is knowing what you don’t know; when to seek out education, consultation or further supervision. Another goal is to develop the skills and confidence to provide services in an ethical and caring way.
