Stress is an unavoidable part of life and we all feel overwhelmed from time to time. While everyone’s experience is different, most of us are familiar with physical reactions to stress. Racing heartbeat, sweaty palms, shaking hands, shallow breathing and upset stomach are some signs of the fight or flight response. A certain amount of stress can be helpful in enhancing motivation and performance, but beyond this optimal level stress harms us physically and emotionally. The longer the source of the stress impacts us, the more likely we are to experience health problems such as headaches, insomnia, burnout, depression, anxiety, fatigue and heart disease.
Much of what stresses us comes from outside ourselves. Some of these external stressors can be reduced or eliminated, but sometimes all we have control over is our reactions to stress. Luckily, we can learn new skills and strategies to help us better manage the day to day stress in our lives. With the support and guidance of a qualified mental health professional, we can learn ways to minimize the impact of stress, even when facing extremely stressful circumstances.
At Campanula Psychological Services we work with our clients to collaboratively develop stress management strategies that work.
