DBT and CBT
DBT was originally developed as a treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder. The foundation of this approach is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which looks at changing behaviours and ways of thinking to better manage emotions. DBT differs from CBT by adding mindfulness practices into the program. Mindfulness at its foundation is awareness of present moment experience. Among the benefits of mindfulness practices, you can learn to experience and accept your thoughts and feelings without being overwhelmed.
Emotion Regulation
DBT also differs from CBT in its focus on learning skills to regulate emotions, one of the key challenges of living with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Individuals with BPD feel their emotions intensely, (although they also may have periods of feeling emotionally numbed). Not only are emotions powerful, but it takes much longer for emotional equilibrium to return to normal. This intensity of emotional experience creates challenges in many areas of life, including interpersonal relationships, self-concept, and impulse control. Individuals with BPD have higher rates of depression and anxiety than the general population, reflections of the high cost of emotional dysregulation.

DBT is an effective treatment for Borderline personality, and has also proven helpful in addressing any issues in which the intensity of emotions causes unhealthy reactions, such as anxiety, avoidance of people, places and situations, or anger outbursts.
In addition to individual therapy, Campanula Psychological Services also offers an online DBT skills training group.
