
Anger may be the most misunderstood of all our emotions. We think of it as a “bad” or negative emotion. In reality anger is just one of the many emotions that serve us. Anger is a messenger that warns us when our boundaries have been crossed or when we may need to defend ourselves against an attack on our mental or physical integrity. Anger can make us strong.
It is our choice what we do with the energy of anger. Some people strike out verbally or physically, harming others in the process. Whether an explosive outburst or slow burning fuse, the destructive power of anger can damage lives, livelihoods, and relationships. Others suppress their anger, some even burying it below conscious awareness. Over time the emotional pressure builds, until it begins to colour our perceptions and interactions. The added stress to our physical health raises our risk of heart attack, stroke and depression.
